One Year Pathways to Degree Level Courses

Our Access to Higher Education courses are an excellent route to university, which will enable you to study your chosen degree course. The Access course lasts one academic year and is structured in a way that enables you to manage your commitments outside of college - an important consideration for adult students.

Students should be at least 19 years old at the start of the course. Our course has outstanding success rates and is very well respected by universities, both locally and nationally; in addition to academic tuition, you will receive the support of a Pathway tutor, who will provide academic and pastoral support throughout the course. You do not necessarily need any formal qualifications or experience to undertake an Access course, but many university degree courses will require GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 or above, in addition to the Access Diploma; if this is the case, we recommend that you gain these qualifications prior to enrolling on the Access course.

We offer a range of Higher Education courses at East Sussex College that offer suitable progression routes from Access to HE. Follow this link to find out more about these courses. Also, guaranteed interviews and/or places may be available for some degree courses at local universities, through schemes such as the Compact programme; we would advise you to check this with the universities that you wish to apply to.

Whichever course you choose you will develop the following

Core Study Skills

  • Managing your workload
  • Communicating and working in group
  • Preparing and delivering group and individual presentations
  • Planning, structuring and developing essay writing
  • Reading, interpreting and analysing academic texts
  • Critical thinking
  • Developing and evaluating research methods
  • Independent study

Application Process

After completing an application form, you will need to book a place on an information session; you will then be invited for an interview with one of our tutors. Information sessions and interviews are held on various dates throughout the year. Please contact our course administrators, who will be happy to deal with your application and any queries that you may have about the course.
