What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job with a training programme wrapped around it. You will be:

  • An employee of the business with a contract of employment
  • Paid at least £6.40 for under 18 and £11.44 for 21 and over* per hour for at least 30 hours per week and have 28 days paid holiday a year
  • Able to have 6hrs 'off the job’ learning which may include one day a week in college
  • Working at any level within the organisation and at any age (over 16)
  • Undertaking a study programme that has been designed to meet the needs of the industry and may take from one year to four years to complete
  • Assessed as to your level of English maths and sometimes IT and may have the subjects included in your learning programme

How to find an apprenticeship for yourself

Start working on your CV and then send it with a covering letter to businesses where you would like to be an apprentice. For example, you could search online for ‘Hairdressers near me’ which will provide a list of hair salons near where you are that might be interested in taking on an apprentice. You may find an email address on their website or you can send your CV and covering letter by post or you can even drop it off in person, which shows that you are proactive and keen to find work.

I am employed and I want to be an apprentice

If you are already employed and you are looking for an apprenticeship that will provide you with a training programme to match your job role, then you are in the right place! It may help if you send us a copy of your job description so that we can be sure to guide you to the right apprenticeship for you. Our apprenticeships are suitable for people at all levels within an organisation and any age. To be an apprentice you will be:

  • An employee of the business with a contract of employment
  • Paid at least £6.40 for under 18 and £11.44 for 21 and over* per hour for at least 30 hours per week and have 28 days paid holiday a year
  • Able to have 20% of your paid time in ‘off the job’ learning which may include one day a week in college
  • Working at any level within the organisation and at any age
  • Undertaking a study programme that has been designed to meet the needs of the industry and may take from one year to four years to complete
  • Assessed as to your level of English maths and sometimes IT and may have the subjects included in your learning programme

* from 1 April 2024
