Graphic Design A-Level

Our A level Graphic Design course is one of the widest-ranging creative disciplines that enables you to explore a diverse breadth of design through art, illustration, product, photography, typography, advertising, editorial fashion and branding experiences. Pursuing the A level Graphic Design course with us will afford you the invaluable opportunity to build and refine your own illustration and graphic design skills to the full, exploring a distinct range of approaches to visual communication, encouraging your own highly personal understanding and visualising the stories of our complex culture and society through image-making and design outcomes.

Teaching is provided within a fully immersive design studio to provide a personal, imaginative and reflective approach to your creation of design and illustration gaining an extensive toolkit of skills and knowledge that will empower you to succeed in the creative industries

What will I study?

Over the two years we will encourage you to experiment while nurturing your personal, imaginative and reflective approach to design. You will experience practical and contextual workshops ensuring an early focus on discovering and developing your own creative voice. Our experienced practitioners will support you through a framework of traditional skills (art, drawing, photography, printmaking), design principles exploring 2D or 3D form (laser cutting, 3D printing), and supportive digital applications (Adobe Creative Suite).

Your first year introduces creative ideas development and basic skills of graphic design, working alongside world-leading design agencies, guest lecturers and client-focused projects. In the following year, you have the opportunity to tailor your studies to fit your evolving interests and complete your personal ideas and professional practice.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

An Art related GCSE grade 4 or an assessed portfolio of work.,Our general entry requirements to study 3 A-Levels or any mixed level 3 programme are: 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 including English Language and/or Maths at grade 5. Subject specific entry criteria may also apply. Our general entry requirements to study 4 A-Levels are: 6 GCSEs grade 4-9 including English Language and Maths at grade 6. Subject specific entry criteria may also apply.

How will I be assessed?

This is purely a practical course. You will work on and complete projects that will be assessed in the form of coursework throughout the two years.

What qualification will I achieve?

The A Level is a two-year course and you have to complete the full 2 years to achieve a qualification.

The work that you produce in the second year will assessed for the qualification and if you are successful it will be graded through bands A to E.

What can I do after completing this course?

Once you have finished this course, you will be well prepared for further study at university. You may choose to study at university across the country or you could study our BA(Hons) Design degree in Lewes, BA (Hons) Graphic Design or Illustration in Hastings. You may also look to seek employment within the creative industries as a designer, artist, or illustrator, working within 3D and packaging, graphics, web, motion and TV production or within advertising and branding.

Are there any extra costs?

You will be charged an initial fee to cover basic materials such as print, paper, ink and paint.

There is an Art shop where you can buy a range of additional materials at discounted prices. You will need to buy sketchbooks. You will be encouraged to participate in gallery visits and you will need to finance you travel and any entry costs.

Additional Info

As a creative student A-Level student, we recommend that you study and work for an additional five hours per week at home or in the studio.

You will also be invited on our annual international study trip, to experience art in different cultures. Recent destinations have been Berlin, Hong Kong, Madrid, New York, Paris and Chicago.
