Discover the essential techniques used by fashion designers to develop garment patterns.
In this practical course you will learn the fundamentals of pattern cutting and draping, starting with drafting a basic bodice block and learning how it can be adapted to create new designs. You will explore methods of fitting on the mannequin, dart manipulation, and style development, gaining an understanding of how designers transform a basic block into different garment shapes.
Through guided exercises you will experiment with both flat pattern cutting and introductory draping techniques, and learn how the bodice block can be extended to create sleeve and dress variations.
This course focuses on pattern cutting, fit and design exploration, rather than garment construction.
By the end of the course you will have developed a bodice block and several design adaptations that can form the foundation for your own garment designs.
Sewing machine knowledge and sewing skills are essential.
