HNC/HND in Healthcare Practice
Our HNC/ HND in Healthcare Practice will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of core skills and principles in Health and Social Care. You will build on existing knowledge and experience while expanding your skills and practice over the duration of the course. You will also prepare for further study or training in healthcare related fields, to help you get ready for a career in this industry.

What will I study?
Both the HNC and HND have a variety of core and optional units to be completed over the academic year.
At Level 4, you will develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the healthcare sector through five core units, one of which is assessed by a Pearson-set assignment, and two optional units.
HNC units include:
- Law, Policy and Ethical Practice in Health and Social Care (Core)
- Demonstrating Professional Principles and Values in Health and Social Care Practice (Core)
- Supporting Dementia Care (Optional)
The HNC in Healthcare Practice requires at least 225 hours of work experience/ placement in health and/or social care settings for one of the core units. A Professional Learning and Development Portfolio which includes reflective accounts will need to be completed to support this unit.
At Level 5, you will develop a sound understanding of the principles in Health and Social Care and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. You will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. You will complete four mandatory and three optional units.
HND units include:
- Reflective Approaches in Implementing Person-centred Practice (Core)
- Supporting Individuals through Significant Life Events (Core)
- Care Planning Processes in Healthcare Practice (Optional)
The HND in Healthcare Practice requires at least 450 hours of work/placement experience, 225 hours from the first year (HNC) and a further 225 in year two. You can use your place of work for this experience.
What previous qualifications or experience do I need?
Successful completion of current course and achievement of level 4 (C) in GCSE English.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed via internally assessed assignments and for a variety of units work based competency will be required. The assessment of BTEC Higher National qualifications is criterion-referenced and centres are required to assess your evidence against published learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
What qualification will I achieve?
After completing the first year you will achieve Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Healthcare Practice. Completing the second year will a Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Healthcare Practice.
What can I do after completing this course?
The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in healthcare practice, which you can build on should you decide to continue your studies beyond the Certificate stage. The Level 5 Higher National Diploma allows you to further specialise by committing to specific career paths and progression routes to degree-level study.
Former students have progressed onto Adult Nursing degrees, top up degrees and Occupational Therapy degrees. Others have progressed in the world of work using their qualification to support and develop their current role or in new roles eg Care Home Manager.
