What will I study?

Experiential work forms an important part of the course. The skills and professional attitudes of counselling are developed through small and large group work, seminars, creative workshops, tutored discussions and lectures. The group process forms an important part of the learning.

The main aims are achieved through students becoming able to:

Use person-centred counselling practice and attitudes to form and maintain effective counselling relationships.

Develop the skills of reflection and reflexivity in relation to their counselling practice.

Analyse the social context of counselling practice including the family, difference, diversity and anti-discriminatory practice, culture, politics, religion and language within contemporary society.

Discuss the application of The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy [BACP] Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions to counselling practice.

Describe how to use supervision effectively.

Develop research knowledge.

Discuss mental health issues in relation to counselling.

Examine the implications of working as a counsellor across a range of work settings including private practice.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

Successful completion of level 2 in Counselling Skills Course.

How will I be assessed?

Your progress and development is monitored through tutor, peer and self assessment and specific assignments. You will complete at least 100 hours placement work and receive at least 25 hours supervision for this work. You will also engage in 40 hours of personal therapy in the life of the course.

What qualification will I achieve?

Foundation Degree in Person-Centred Counselling validated by the University of East Anglia.

This Person-Centred Counselling course is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

What can I do after completing this course?

Many students choose to stay with us to gain the BSc Person Centred Counselling (Top-up) degree, which is available as a one-year full time, or two year part time programme.

Our qualified students now work in a wide range of services including; abuse services, drug and alcohol addiction services, primary care counselling, relationship services, loss and bereavement, services for young people, mental health services and careers services as well as in private practice. Qualification from the course is the first stage towards professional accreditation and will also enable students to progress to higher levels of study.

Are there any extra costs?

The course includes 2 residential weekends during the two years, at a local hotel which are at an additional cost of approximately £180 each.

Personal counselling costs are normally in the range of £35-£50 per session, although some counsellors' offer reduced fees to counsellors in training.

Placement supervision is often offered free of charge. However, students may need to add on supervision hours to the ones they are offered in placements to meet college or BACP requirements. Supervision costs for private supervision range from £25-£45 per hour.

Additional Info
