PGCE/CertEd Further Education and Training Level 6

Teaching is a very fun and rewarding career. These courses will give you the skills needed to enter into the Lifelong Learning Sector of post 14 to 16 education. FULL TIME FAST TRACK PGCE The full-time PGCE is a pre-service course running for 1 academic year at Hastings. It is specifically for graduates who have very little or no teaching experience. PART TIME PGCE/CERT ED The part-time PGCE/CertEd is an in-service course suitable for those who are currently teachers, usually already teaching in a college or adult learning environment. The course includes taught sessions at the college, one evening a week with an expert team who have their own successful experience as further education practitioners. The course is suitable for both graduates (PGCE), or professionals in industry who may not have a first degree (CertEd). You can study the Cert Ed if you have a Level 3 qualification, but have not obtained a degree;

What will I study?

Core modules - 6 modules FT/ 3 modules per year PT.

The modules shown for this course are those currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new modules. Please note that programme structures and individual modules are subject to amendment from time to time as part of the University’s curriculum enrichment programme and in line with changes in the University’s policies and requirements.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

An honours degree at 2:2 or above in an appropriate discipline; GCSE A*-C or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths / proof of enrolment on a GCSE or Functional Skills English and maths course; up to date DBS check; confirmation of teaching hours; proof of qualifications; a satisfactory reference.

How will I be assessed?

Each course has 6 modules that are summatively assessed at different submission points throughout the academic year. (1 year FAST TRACK or over 2 years PT). You are continually assessed throughout and will be required to do self assessment against your ongoing practice. You will have regular 1-1's with your tutor; the college also has an HE mentor to support you with your academic writing. Over the duration of the course, you will learn how to effectively plan lessons, practice your teaching techniques and develop your personal teaching style in your subject specific area. This will be supported by the study of learning theory, delivered through seminars, tutorials and shared expertise sessions with leading practitioners.

What qualification will I achieve?

Certificate of Education (CertEd) Level 5 or Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Level 6 As well as gaining a PGCE/CertEd. There is an opportunity to apply for Qualified Teaching and Learning Skill status (QTLS) once you have successfully completed the course and in employment.

What can I do after completing this course?

Once you have completed the course you will have greater scope for employment in the private and public sector . You will have developed a diverse range of skills that will enable you to start your career in the world of teaching.

Are there any extra costs?

You will be told of any course books during your interview/induction period that you will be using as part of your studies (Approx cost £50). However, we do have access to e-books via the UOB study portal and the learning resource centre at the college.

The entry requirements for the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE FT & PT), are a minimum 2:2 honours degree and mandatory GCSE C/4 or above, in both English and maths or an equivalent L2 qualification in these subjects. The entry requirements for the Certificate of Education (CertEd) are a Level 3 qualification in your subject specific area and GCSE C/4 or above, in both English and maths or an equivalent L2 qualification in these subjects.

*It is a requirement that you have the English and maths before you commence your studies, you can no longer work towards these whilst studying the course.
