What will I study?

Along with developing reading and writing skills such as spelling, punctuation and grammar, you will read, understand and analyse a wide range of non-fiction texts including letters, articles, reviews, emails and other online texts. You will explore how language is used in different contexts and learn how to communicate clearly and professionally. You will also study spoken communication and develop your speaking and listening skills.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by taking two exams: one that focuses on writing and one on reading skills. You will also complete two speaking and listening assessments. Successful completion of all three components (reading, writing, and speaking and listening) will result in you achieving a Pass as your final grade.

What can I do after completing this course?

You could progress on to further study including GCSE English, or into employment or technical education such as an apprenticeship.

Are there any extra costs?

If you are aged 19 or over and have not previously achieved a Level 2 in Functional Skills English, or a C grade or grade 4 (or higher) in GCSE English, then this course will be fully funded for you. However, there may be additional costs for course materials.
