English Language GCSE

Study with us and gain a GCSE in English Language. The course will enable you to read a wide range of texts fluently and with good understanding. You will learn to read critically and use the knowledge and skills gained from wider reading to inform and improve your own writing. You will learn to write effectively and coherently using standard English, and you will also develop your spoken communication skills. Please note: this is an examination class.

Gaining a grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language can help you achieve your personal or career goals - it is a stepping stone to many types of education and employment. You should take this course if you intend to progress to a Level 3 programme, apply for a university course, or if this qualification is required by specific employers.

What will I study?

GCSE English is a key qualification that acts as a gateway to furthering your education and career. You'll cover literature to help develop reading skills, analyse texts and improve writing skills. You will study our combined English Language and Literature GCSE, which includes practical development of your spelling, punctuation and grammar skills. You will then be able to write effectively and coherently using standard English appropriately.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on your coursework and in a final exam. You will submit four Controlled Assessments throughout the year, which are aggregated with the result of your exam to produce your final grade. The total assessments are split 40% coursework and 60% written exams.

What qualification will I achieve?

Once you have completed this course and pass the exam, you will achieve a GCSE in English Language.

What can I do after completing this course?

You could progress on to further study including at Level 3, university, or into employment.

Are there any extra costs?

If you are aged 19 or over and have not previously achieved a grade C / 4 (or higher) in GCSE English, then this course will be fully funded for you.

However, there may be additional costs for course materials or if you need to resit an exam.

Additional Info

This course is for adults aged 19 and over who have previously achieved a grade D / 3 in the subject or have completed a Level 1 / 2 Functional Skills course.

All applicants will be required to attend an initial assessment session ahead of enrolment to enable us to gauge your current knowledge in the subject; this is to ensure you are enrolled onto the most suitable course. In some cases, this may be a Functional Skills / pre-GCSE course.
