English Language GCSE
Study with us and gain a GCSE in English Language. The course will enable you to read a wide range of texts fluently and with good understanding. You will learn to read critically and use the knowledge and skills gained from wider reading to inform and improve your own writing. You will learn to write effectively and coherently using standard English, and you will also develop your spoken communication skills.
Gaining a grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language can help you achieve your personal or career goals - it is a stepping stone to many types of education and employment. You should take this course if you intend to progress to a Level 3 programme, apply for a university course, or if this qualification is required by specific employers.

What will I study?
Along with developing reading and writing skills such as spelling, punctuation and grammar, you will read, understand and analyse a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. You will explore how language is used in different contexts and see how attitudes and views have changed over time. You will also be required to give a formal presentation to develop your spoken communication skills.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by taking two final exams at the end of the course: one that focuses on fiction writing and one on non-fiction texts. Each paper is 105 minutes in duration. The scores from each are combined to produce your final grade. You will also be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction for your formal presentation but this does not contribute to your overall grade.
What qualification will I achieve?
Once you have completed this course and pass the exam, you will achieve a GCSE in English Language.
What can I do after completing this course?
You could progress on to further study including Level 3 courses, university and higher education programmes, or use the qualification for employment.
Are there any extra costs?
If you are aged 19 or over and have not previously achieved a Level 2 in Functional Skills English, or a C grade or grade 4 (or higher) in GCSE English Language, then this course will be fully funded for you. However, there may be additional costs for course materials or if you choose to resit the exams in the autumn.
Additional Info
This course is for adults aged 19 and over who have previously achieved a D grade or grade 3 in the subject, or who have completed a Level 1 Functional Skills course.
All applicants will be required to attend an initial assessment session ahead of enrolment to enable us to identify your current knowledge in the subject and ensure you are enrolled onto the most suitable course. In some cases, this may be a pre-GCSE course, such as Functional Skills.
