Access to Higher Education: Humanities combined with Social Science

Our Humanities and Social Sciences Access course prepares you for degree-level study in a variety of degree courses. You will learn more about subjects, including Sociology, Psychology, History and English, while developing your research skills, ready for your degree.

The people who come onto Access courses often feel they did not fulfil their potential at school. They may have spent many years in unsatisfying work, been at home looking after children or have otherwise been in a situation where they have needed to take a decision about bringing about a change in their lives.

What they all do have in common is a thirst for knowledge and a desire to carry on with their education.

What will I study?

During this year-long course, you will study topics, including Sociology, Psychology, History and English, while developing your research skills, ready for your chosen degree course. These units will give you the necessary qualification to progress to a Medicine, Veterinary, or Dentistry degree. The course is made up of 60 credits, of which 45 are graded, and 15 are un-graded.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

You must hold GCSE English or Maths at C /4 or above and retake the other alongside the Access course if you don’t have both.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by essays, reports, textual analysis, seminar presentations and examinations. You will also submit assignments for each subject unit and complete coursework in the core units.

You will also submit a 5,000-word research project on a subject of your choice, which will form a major part of the overall assessment.

What qualification will I achieve?

Once you have completed this course, you will achieve a Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma in Humanities Combined with Social Science.

What can I do after completing this course?

Once you have finished this course, you can progress onto humanities or social science-related degree courses at universities across the country. Many of our students go on to local universities, such as the University of Sussex, Brighton and Chichester (guaranteed interviews and guaranteed places are offered for some courses at these universities through the Compact programme).

Are there any extra costs?

There are a few small extra costs associated with this course, as you will need to pay a small fee for your UCAS application to universities, and you may wish to buy some textbooks relating to the A-Level Science syllabus.
