What will I study?

You will learn the essential animation principles through practical workshops and lectures, and from there, you will build your knowledge of animation techniques and mediums, embracing traditional and new media technology.

All aspects of animation will be explored. You will learn about hand drawn and digital 2D, stop motion and 3D animation with a particular focus on modelling and rigging, as well as learning techniques for blending live action an animation footage. Through the workshop activities, talks and assignments, there will be an emphasis on planning and pre-production, production and post-production skills, and how they relate to the industry. There are opportunities to learn film and sound editing and compositing techniques.

In the final year you will undertake a dissertation and final self-initiated project leading up to an end of year screening of your work, and the team are on hand to support you to submit your work for animation festivals and competitions.

During the course you will study a range of topics including:

  • Principles of Animation
  • Pre-production, narrative planning, storyboard, character and set design.
  • Traditional hand drawn and 2D animation techniques and skills.
  • Stop Motion Animation
  • Introduction to CGI 3D animation, modelling and rigging.
  • Experimental Animation Techniques
  • Live Action-animation compositing workshop, including introduction to motion capture techniques, AR and VR.
  • Introduction to contextual and critical studies
  • Working for industry through competitions, festivals and work experience
  • History of Animation and Contextual Studies, including a dissertation

The course culminates in a final celebratory student showcase, including industry networking opportunities to get you set for your next steps.

Software covered includes the Adobe Suite, Toon Boom Harmony and Storyboard Pro, Moho, Dragonframe and Blender.

What can I do after completing this course?

Once you have graduated, you will have a diverse range of transferable skills to start you career, entering the creative industry in a number of areas including animation, game design, film, advertising or illustration. You may decide to begin freelance work, or progress onto MA Animation programmes.
