Meditation and Mindfulness

This introductory course forms a foundation for starting, or re-starting, a practice in meditation that supports health and well-being. We will use learn simple mindfulness and meditation practices to regain contentment, whilst addressing issues such as mild anxiety, stress and emotional distress. In a supportive, adult learning environment we will explore different meditation practices, consider the sources of stress in our lives and learn simple techniques to address them.

What will I study?

This course is suitable for beginners as well as those with an existing, perhaps ‘rusty’ meditation practice. It is can address day to day low mood states but may be unsuitable for those with an underlying mental health condition. If you are under the direction of a doctor, please check first and obtain their agreement that you may attend this course.

By the end of this course I will be able to:

• Use four different meditation techniques • Recognise the key stressors in my own life and start to understand my own pattern of reacting to these • Reduce the negative effects of stress through using the techniques I learn and daily meditation practice • Be more mindful in daily life and in meditation • Experience the benefits of improved health and a sense of well-being through understanding and applying the practices learned on this course

We will practice seated meditation in the sessions and explore topics through structured activities and interactive presentations. You will be asked to undertake a daily meditation practice of 10 to 20 minutes and encouraged to keep a learning journal, for the duration of the course.

What qualification will I achieve?

There is no qualification for this course but you will receive a certificate of attendance if you complete the course.

What can I do after completing this course?

You can explore a variety of other courses within Community Learning or the adult college.

Are there any extra costs?

This course is free if you are in receipt of benefits or earn less than £25,000 per year (this includes pension income)
