I started writing the book in 2015, alongside running my nutritional therapy business and teaching the nutrition modules on the Complementary Healthcare course. It was quite a heavy workload, but I chipped away at pulling together all of my research, then created a plan and submitted it to my publisher, Alchimia Publishing.

Mollie added, “Writing about showbiz and working with the Daily Star showbiz team was all a dream and to have done so for almost two years is the biggest honour. I have learnt so much about the industry from Daily Star and although I never thought I'd be a tabloid journalist, I couldn't be happier or more proud of how my career turned out. I then got the opportunity (only three weeks ago!!) to go on a placement at Mirror (where I had already freelanced before) on their showbiz desk, but as part of the all-new US team.

At the time of writing, BTEC results were still to be announced. While university remains the main focus of progression for the majority of ESC students, apprenticeships are something more and more young people are considering. Penny Shearer, Business Development Co-ordinator of Sussex Skills Solutions, the apprenticeship arm of East Sussex College, explains why: “Students consider an apprenticeship as a viable alternative to going to university. They can stay at home and do a study programme, whilst working towards a degree. Working for a business while studying can send them in a different direction in terms of progression. We offer Level 4 apprenticeships which is equivalent to a Foundation Degree and we offer Level 5 Management apprenticeships too. It’s a viable alternative to university for a number of students."

So before you start writing, make a few notes about why you want to study there.

Reflecting on the creative journey Alfie admitted that writing and performing a solo show is a challenge, but one that has brought huge rewards: “It’s not been an easy journey by any means. I’m constantly changing/rewriting the script to ensure it has a lasting effect on the audience. However, it has been a very rewarding process that I'm truly grateful for. To gain interest from the industry is very exciting as it’s now begun to venture out of the south coast! Big things are coming soon is all I'm going to say.”

Over the next few years I want to keep writing and release music, hopefully growing and building my online profile to reach more people. There is so much more I want to achieve and so much more I want to do - I just need to keep working everyday and putting in the hours until I get to where I want to be.

She is also waiting to hear back about a writing scholarship with Curtis Brown Creative. If successful, she plans to defer university for a year to complete the scholarship first.

While studying at East Sussex College, Joe and Frankie started writing a musical, which at the time was semi-staged as “Musical Song Cycle”, at the end of their time at the College. The musical has evolved and developed over time and is now ready to be performed at 54 Below, a famous bar in Manhattan, New York.

“What I liked best was that it wasn’t just about writing code; it was also about figuring out how different parts of a system work together to solve problems in the real world. That’s what made me want to do it.”

Try gathering all the items you need for classes, from writing materials such as pens, pencils and notepads, to more specific items such as paints or even a uniform.

A typical day in Joe’s life as an automotive journalist is a blend of research, writing, and production. “I spend a good chunk of my day researching facts and figures for pieces I’m writing, then collating archive photos or organising photo shoots for specific magazine features,” he shared.

“The ESOL course helped me not only improve my English but also understand British culture, academic writing, and communication. I learned how to write essays, take part in discussions, and express my opinions clearly - skills that are essential for university life.”

The guests talked about how they got into the media industry. Dan Gasser shared how he started out writing letters and hanging around studios. He told students, "You've got to hustle a little bit."

“I'd love to stay in the department and teach the next generations about my passion. I'm particularly interested in teaching performance and songwriting, so hopefully that can be in my future. And musically, I'm writing some more songs at the moment and will be working on a bigger album!”

The other thing I need in my life is a list - and usually a very nice notebook (often one of my treats!). Without a list, my head feels fuzzy, and the anxiety soon crashes over me. Writing a list will let me set everything out and help me prioritise what I need to do first. Remember, it's prioritising, not procrastinating!

But Kailun’s desire to carve his own path in music led him to explore his own sound and songwriting abilities. Reflecting on his experience, Kailun shared, “What separated me from other artists was my passion for music and writing.”

“When you grow up here you don’t realise it, but it draws in a lot of people from around the country. Having good tutors that can help you understand that and help you with even little things like assisting with writing a personal statement, there’s really nothing too big or too small. I’m really glad I’ve had the tutors I’ve had.”

Originally from Iran, Hamideh began her time at the College by studying English through the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programme. With the help of supportive tutors and a welcoming learning environment, her confidence in speaking, reading, and writing English quickly grew.

Mark Allen, Director of International at East Sussex College, said, “We’re delighted to be able to expand our ESOL in Eastbourne. Our new course will follow the same successful format of our ESOL course in Hastings, helping people with their writing, reading, listening, and speaking.

Other leavers for 2017 include BTEC Art & Design Extended Diploma student, Jade Earley, who was the youngest competitor and finalist on The Great British Sewing Bee in 2016. Jade finishes her time at SDC and is already working with a Brighton Fashion House, alongside writing a column for a sewing magazine, creating her own fashion designs and being an ambassador for young adults suffering with Dyslexia.

East Sussex College has offered Degree courses for over 25 years. The HE department celebrates continuing outstanding achievements as each cohort graduates into the industry sectors it serves. Former HE student, Nicole Marshall studied Music Production and Creative Recording (BA Hons) in Eastbourne. Nicole, under the stage name Nikki Cislyn, won an Ivor Novello Award and Grammy Award (2015) for writing and featuring on Clean Bandit’s Number One hit single, ‘Rather Be’.

“It’s mainly through my work and the travelling I have done. Obviously travel is a major pollutant as well, but through the journeys I do, we try to understand what we’re doing to our world. We try to capture that on film and show people. I’m totally passionate about it and really believe in it. In some ways I think it helps that I wasn’t bird watching from the age of eight. Maybe I love it more as a result. Also, what I did before TV, writing books about terrorism and all this mad scary stuff, that helps to give you context for my concerns now. Yeah, I’m worried about nuclear weapons and terrorism, but I also know with certainty from what I’ve seen across the planet that what we’re doing to our world is a great threat. I can say it with some legitimacy, because I’ve seen it.”

Artwork from talented students studying at East Sussex College will be installed in permanent picture frames to help freshen up and bring the room to life. The exhibition will start at Burgess Hill station, and will then extend to include other stations along the Southern network.

“I have received a great deal of support in the notion, which I am waiting for final clearance from the Charity Commission to run the charity at East Sussex College Hastings, so that people who graduate are not lost.

“Over 60 people received help from us last night,” Trudy continues. “There were 28 people waiting for us to distribute hot food - a roast chicken dinner which is kindly donated by a local pub every other week.”

Back in March 2021, Josh became one of the first artists to exhibit work in train station waiting rooms through the project ‘Art on the Line’. The former award-winning photographer was full of praise for tutors at East Sussex College.
