The Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction and The Built Environment offers you a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning modules, as well as units within general ‘pathways’, including Construction Technology, Science and Materials, Construction Information and Individual projects. This effectively builds underpinning core skills, with general specialisation; preparing you for further specialisation at Level 5. You will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace scenarios.

What will I study?

You will study a range of skills and techniques including site surveying, construction management, quantity surveying, health and safety, and research methods. The course will develop your knowledge and use of construction and some civil engineering principles to solve practical construction problems.

The units covered in this course are: Mandatory Units: Unit 1 Individual Project Unit 2 Construction Technology Unit 3 Science and Materials Unit 6 Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification)

Optional Units include: Unit 4 Construction Practise and Management Unit 5 Legal and Statutory Responsibilities in Construction Unit 7 Surveying, Measuring & Setting Out Unit 11 Measurement & Estimating Unit 18 Civil Engineering Technology

In addition you will develop the five main employability skills:

  • Cognitive and problem-solving skills: critical thinking, approaching non-routine problems by applying expert and creative solutions, use of systems and digital technology, generating and communicating ideas creatively.
  • Interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self- monitoring and self-development, self-analysis and reflection, planning and prioritising.

The teaching is relevant and contextual to real world applications.
