FdSc Person-Centred Counselling Foundation Degree

Personal development forms an important part of the course. The skills and professional attitudes of counselling are developed through small and large group work, seminars, creative workshops, tutored discussions and lectures. The group process forms an important part of your learning.

The main aims of the Foundation Degree in Person-Centred Counselling are to enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to work as effective person-centred counsellors within a range of work settings including private practice and to provide opportunities for professional and academic progression.

The aims are achieved through students becoming able to:

Use person-centred counselling skills and attitudes to form and maintain effective counselling relationships.

Develop the skills of reflection and reflexivity in relation to their counselling practice.

Analyse the social context of counselling practice including the family, difference and diversity, culture, politics, religion and language within contemporary society.

Discuss the application of The British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists [BACP] ethical framework to counselling practice.

Describe how to use supervision effectively. Use research effectively and develop research knowledge and skills. Discuss mental health issues in relation to counselling. Examine the implications of working as a counsellor across a range of work settings including private practice.

The course is based on the person centered philosophy and therapy of Carl Rogers. All course tutors are qualified and experience person-centred counsellors.

Your progress and development is monitored through tutor, peer and self assessment and specific assignments. You will complete 100 hours placement work and receive 25 hours supervision for this work. You will also engage in 40 hours of personal therapy in the life of the course.

Foundation Degree in Person-Centred Counselling validated by the University of East Anglia.

This Foundation Degree is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). You will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to work as an effective person-centred counsellor within a highly respected professional framework valued by clients and employers.

There are many career and progression opportunities once you graduate with a Foundation Degree in Person-Centred Counselling. Counsellors now work in a wide range of services including; abuse services, drug and alcohol addiction, primary care counselling, relationship services, loss and bereavement, services for young people, mental health services and careers services as well as in private practice. Qualification from the course will enable counsellors to work towards professional accreditation and to pursue higher education in counselling related fields.

The course includes 2 residential weekends at a local hotel which are at an additional cost of approximately £160 each.

Personal counselling costs are normally in the range of £30-£45 per session though some counsellor’s offer reduced fees to counsellors in training.

Placement supervision is usually offered free of charge. However, students may need to add on supervision hours to the ones they are offered in placements to meet college or BACP requirements. Supervision costs for private supervision range from £30-£45 per hour though most supervisors’ who supervise College students charge nearer the lower end of this scale.
