East Sussex College lecturer becomes a published author

After a three-month delay, my release date arrived on 19th August. I celebrated with an online book launch and invited people to join me for a virtual read along, with mugs of tea and glasses of bubbly in hand! In the first few months of it going on sale, it is doing really well and has received some incredibly positive reviews. It even has a glowing review from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall!

Project Dalek

The shiny black motorised robot was built with trade skills used in fields such as engineering, carpentry and motor vehicle maintenance. The makings of the Dalek began with a wood skeleton, then into a mould to create a fibre glass body. The Dalek has now become quite a complex project. It has the requisite plunger arms, is encased in thermal plastic and it is soon to become remote control. Hopefully it has not been programmed to exterminate mankind, but it looks like it could.

Esports Students Rally Support for Carers Charity

To make it fun and to engage the online audience, students decided that they had to do a forfeit when a donation was made - these included taping up their fingers, wearing a Wookie mask, a bucket on head, gardening gloves, coloured tinted glasses and bunny masks, they also played sitting on the ground!

Creative Media students hustings coverage goes viral

The first-year students, who study the extended diploma in Creative Media Production, were invited to cover the event and produce promotional videos for all four candidates for the Hastings Independent Press. Applying strict rules of journalistic impartiality the students devised a set of standard questions from a student perspective to ask all the candidates. They then put the candidates in the college’s glass elevators and asked them for their elevator pitch for the youth vote of Hastings.

WorldSkills entry showcases a creative cut and burst of colour

Melanie’s next goal is to build her own clientele in the salon where she’s just started to work. What else does she enjoy that’s enough of a compelling challenge? “I like styling bridal hair,” Melanie responds. When we comment how hard bridal hairstyles must be, Melanie smiles, “It’s not the hair that’s hard, it’s the brides.” Bridezillas aside, Melanie looks forward to developing her craft. “My biggest challenge right now is working in a mask, because I wear glasses, they keep steaming up and I can’t see anything! So if anyone finds a good brand of mask that this doesn’t happen with, please let me know!”

Kaiya Swain is ready to represent the UK in the WorldSkills Final

Kaiya excelled in the UK Skills competitions, competing in the National Finals at Level 3. She was then selected to compete for a coveted spot on the UK Squad. Kaiya made the squad spent two years training in the competition. In November 2016, the UK Squad was whittled down to two competitors: Kaiya and a Beauty Therapist in Glasgow. In March 2017, it was announced that Kaiya would represent the UK in Abu Dhabi this autumn.

From Classroom to Cabin Manager: Hannah's Journey from ESC to British Airways

Hannah’s career has taken her from the seas to the skies, offering her a unique perspective on different aspects of the travel industry. Comparing her experiences, she explained, "Working at the airport and on the cruise ships was very different in the sense you always had somewhere to go if you needed a minute to yourself or even just a small breather. Working in a cabin on board an aircraft (especially on short haul) you don’t have that. You are continuously in the public eye."

Currently, Kiki is in the midst of auditioning for top drama schools, a process she describes as “vigorous and exciting.” She’s making big strides, with her third-round audition for RADA coming up next week and a second-round audition for Guildhall the week after. “This course made me realise how deep my love for theatre is and I want to continue exploring that passion at drama school,” Kiki said, highlighting how the course has helped solidify her aspirations.

May the force be with you: Motor Vehicle students to unveil pimped up three-wheeler for charity

The 1986 classic three-wheeled car, bought on Ebay by Chandlers Building Supplies for £200, has been at the college’s Automotive Training Centre since March and is set to be unveiled on Thursday 25th July. In total, 43 students worked on rebuilding the engine and overhauled the bodywork to create a daring Darth Vader-mobile.

Jack echoed the words of his classmates and teammates, and expressed his pride at being included in the squad. He said, “It felt good to see my name in the final squad. I’m very proud and can't wait to get started at St Georges Park. I’m not sure what to expect, but I’m looking forward to it. I found the qualifying stages alright, there’s obviously a lot of good players, but it was a good experience.

Creative Media students grill Hastings MP and cabinet minister Amber Rudd

Five students were selected from a class of 30 on the popular Visual Effects and Creative Media Production course and travelled to London for the day on Monday 11th March. They were able to research and collect material about a range of different topics including the ownership of Hastings Pier, homelessness, cannabis legalisation, global warming, and student debt.

It's not just learning inside the classroom either. I've been able to work on and gain experience during some really great media events. In the run-up to the 2019 General Election, I had the chance to record the Hastings hustings event that took place at Station Plaza. We set up cameras, interviewed MPs in the elevators so they could give us their 1-minute manifestos, and live-streamed the Q&A with the audience.

The science labs are spacious and class sizes are small which means the teacher is always accessible to you. There’s a really good library where I do all my work in my breaks. There’s an individual study section and all the books you need. I have quite big breaks in my timetable so it’s really easy for me to do my work during the day at college. Lessons are an hour and a half long so quite a lot of content is covered and if you need any help you can ask. I find the staff very supportive.
